On September 5th, 2025, FRAG will proudly dedicate our Second Annual Golf Tournament to honor ATF Special Agent and retired U.S. Marine Matt Murray. Matt sustained life-altering injuries while heroically intervening in a violent incident to protect others, and his courage exemplifies the very spirit of service and sacrifice that FRAG was created to support.

Through all funds raised at this year’s tournament, we will provide Matt and his family with a life-changing all-terrain Trackchair and a fully accessible mobility van, resources that will restore freedom of movement, enhance his independence, and ease the challenges of daily life. This is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a powerful demonstration of gratitude from a community that stands behind its heroes.

Please scroll below to see Matt’s story of heroism, and join us in making a meaningful impact on Matt’s journey toward healing and empowerment.

Matthew Murray is a Marine Combat Veteran, a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, a servant of his community, a husband, and a father of two young children.  On December 27, 2024, his life and that of his family and friends was changed forever when he was shot and paralyzed in a senseless and cowardly act.

Matt was a typical American boy: rambunctious, athletic, and intelligent.  He was a high school wrestling champion and Eagle Scout.  Matt was raised in a military household (his grandfather, father, and brother all retired as senior U.S. Marine Corps Officers) and consequently lived and was educated in many different locales, including Okinawa, Japan.  Through his exposure to different people, customs, and cultures, he developed a sense of place and responsibility in our society.  Along the way, a lifelong desire to serve and protect others became the foundational bedrock of who Matt Murray is to this day.

Matt attended and graduated from Florida State University.  He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and became an accomplished CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter pilot, participating in three Operation Iraqi Freedom deployments where he flew numerous combat missions supporting Marine Corps and coalition ground forces.  After his combat tours, he transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve to continue his military service while pursuing other endeavors.  Matt served in the reserves until 2020, when he retired as a Major after 20 years of honorable and loyal service.  In 2015, Matt joined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).  He served as a field agent participating in numerous large-scale operations that targeted, captured, and convicted some of the most dangerous drug dealers and weapons distributors our Nation faces.

On December 27th, Matt and his wife, Courtney, took their children Wyatt (8) and Parker (5) to the neighborhood bowling alley to celebrate Wyatt’s baseball win. They joined several other families. As Matt and his group of family and friends were departing, he observed three individuals engaged in an apparent violent argument targeted at random individuals.  After ensuring his family was out of danger, he approached the feuding group and attempted to de-escalate the situation.  Matt properly identified himself as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer and asked the group to disperse.  During this encounter, one of the individuals approached Matt from behind and shot him in the neck with a 9mm handgun. Matt’s children heard the gunshot and saw their dad fall to the ground.  They heard their mom scream as she applied pressure to Matt’s wound until paramedics arrived.  All of their lives are forever changed because of another person’s lack of respect for human life.

Matt suffered a devastating injury to his spinal cord that renders him a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life.  This horrendous injury not only affects Matt, but also devastates his wife, children, siblings, parents, and his close USMC and ATF friends and colleagues.  The community at large has lost the services of a protector and an outstanding citizen.  We are all lessened by this unprovoked and pointless tragedy.
